How May I Obtain A Certified Copy of A Birth Certificate?

It may be obtained through the Town/City Clerk’s office in the city or town where you were born or in the city or town where the parents were living at the time of the birth. The fee for a certified copy of a birth certificate is ten dollars ($10.00) and one dollar ($1.00) for postage.

How May I Obtain A Certified Copy of A Death Certificate?

It may be obtained through the Town Clerk’s office in the city or town the decedent lived in at the time of death or in the city or town where the individual died. The fee for a certified copy of a death certificate is ten dollars ($10.00) and one dollar ($1,00)for postage.

Please note: Effective July 1, 2026, Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c. 46, § 1) restricts access to death records containing a decedent's full Social Security number (SSN). These records may only be released to individuals who have a legitimate need, as defined by state law and regulations.

Individuals who are eligible to receive a death record containing the SSN include:

• The decedent's spouse or domestic partner
• Parent or legal guardian
• Child
• Grandchild
• Grandparent
• Sibling
• The informant listed on the death record
• The licensed funeral director listed on the death record
• The conservator, personal representative, or legal representative of the decedent's estate
• A government official requiring the SSN to perform an official government function
• A person authorized by court order
• Any other individual with a direct tangible interest in the decedent's estate, at the discretion of the Registrar of Vital Records and Statistics or the Town Clerk where the death occurred

Please note: Documentation required to establish eligibility varies depending on your relationship to the decedent. Proof of identity and supporting documentation is required before a record containing the SSN can be released.

• If you do not qualify to receive a death record containing the full Social Security number, a certified copy with the SSN redacted is available.

 How May I Obtain A Certified Copy of A Marriage License?

 It may be obtained through the Town Clerk’s office in the city or town in which the marriage intentions were taken out. The fee for a certified copy of certified marriage license is ten dollars ($10.00) and one dollar ($1.00) for postage.

Please call ahead so that your request is ready when you arrive at the Town Clerk’s office for pick up.
